Lassonde’s Prof. Sushanta Mitra has been inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
Mitra is the Chair of Mechanical Engineering at the Lassonde School of Engineering and Kaneff Professor in Micro & Nanotechnology for Social Innovation.
The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) is the national institution through which Canada’s most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada.
“To join the ranks of such an accomplished group of engineering leaders is a distinct honour for me. Recognition by one’s peers remains the most valuable and meaningful source of pride for any professional in their chosen field, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering certainly represents the pinnacle of engineering excellence in our country,” said Mitra upon his induction.
“I intend to use this opportunity to build productive relationships with colleagues in the engineering profession, both in academia and industry, for the benefit of students and researchers at the Lassonde School, and across this University, and also provides great opportunity to build bridge between engineering, natural and social sciences in Canadian research landscape.” he added.
Professor Mitra was inducted at a ceremony held at the Hamilton Art Gallery on Thursday, June 4.
Members of the CAE are nominated and elected by their peers to honorary Fellowships, in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession. Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering are committed to ensuring that Canada’s engineering expertise is applied to the benefit of all Canadians.

Dr. Sushanta Mitra is a visionary leader and a researcher who has made significant impact on the society through successfully merging the fundamental knowledge of fluid transport in micro/nano-systems with applications in energy, environment and bio-systems. His innovative efforts and works have opened up new avenues for translational research. His visionary leadership on bi-lateral relations between Canada and India in post-secondary education and research has created significant collaborative opportunities for researchers and students of both countries. For his exceptional contributions in science and engineering in Canada and globally, he has been elected as the Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada, American Society for Mechanical Engineers, and Royal Society of Chemistry.
